GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
If your GreenFiber blown-in attic insulation has settled, gotten wet from a roof leak, or been torn up by rodents, we stock GreenFiber cellulose insulation at Woolsey Insulation Dallas and can usually get it topped off or replaced within one or two business days. Installed pricing for a typical Dallas attic runs between $1,800 and $4,200 depending on square footage and current R-value; you get a written price before any work starts, never a door-step surprise. Most homeowners discover the problem in August, when the upstairs rooms won’t hold temperature and the AC bill jumps. That’s the fiber doing less thermal work than it should.
GreenFiber is a cellulose insulation product: it’s made mostly from recycled newsprint treated with boric acid for fire resistance and pest deterrence. It’s blown in as loose fill and settles into a dense, gray blanket across your attic floor. When it’s installed correctly at the right depth, it works for decades. When it gets compressed, soaked, or scattered by attic traffic, it stops doing its job quietly, and your electric meter notices before you do.
Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To
We work with GreenFiber’s residential blown-in cellulose product line, which covers the material most Dallas homes have in their attics: GreenFiber INS541LD, INS515LD, and the Sanctuary by GreenFiber line. These are all loose-fill products, not batts, so the issue isn’t a “part” in the mechanical sense. What fails or degrades is the installed blanket of insulation itself, and the fix is almost always a top-off, a re-blow, or a full removal and replacement.
Here’s the compatibility detail that matters: GreenFiber cellulose is typically installed to a target depth, not to a model spec stamped on a product tag. The bag label will list an R-value per inch (usually around R-3.7 per inch for settled material). To hit R-38, which is the minimum we recommend for Dallas attics, you need roughly 10 to 11 inches of settled GreenFiber. If your attic has 4 or 5 inches, you’re running at R-15 to R-18, and your house is leaking conditioned air straight through the ceiling. We stock GreenFiber on our trucks for top-off jobs and also carry quality compatible cellulose when a full re-blow makes more sense. One catch to know: if your existing attic insulation is fiberglass batts with a thin layer of cellulose on top, we generally recommend removing the batts and doing a clean GreenFiber blow rather than mixing materials that settle at different rates.
Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms run 8 to 12 degrees warmer than the rest of the house on hot afternoons. This usually means the insulation has settled below its original depth, and the ceiling is transferring heat faster than the AC can offset it.
- You can see the ceiling joists poking through the insulation when you pop your head into the attic. Joists exposed above the fill line are a visual giveaway that the GreenFiber has compressed. A healthy Dallas attic should show a smooth, even blanket with no framing visible.
- Your energy bill climbed noticeably over one or two summers without a change in usage. Cellulose loses R-value when it packs down or gets damp, and the electric rate doesn’t care why.
- The insulation looks matted or dark in patches near the eaves or under the roof deck. That’s moisture. GreenFiber can absorb roof-leak water, then mat down and lose its loft permanently in those areas.
- You find rat or squirrel tunnels through the material. Rodents love loose-fill cellulose as nesting material. Once they burrow through it, large sections of the attic floor lose coverage entirely.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Dallas attic, a GreenFiber top-off where we blow additional material to bring you up to R-38 or R-49 typically runs between $1,200 and $2,800 depending on attic size and current depth. A full removal of old, damaged, or rodent-contaminated insulation and a clean re-blow generally lands between $2,800 and $4,800. Attics with steep pitches, tight access hatches, or old vermiculite present drive the higher end.
Every quote includes the material, the labor, the machine time, and disposal of any waste we pull out. You get a written price before we show up with a hose, and a written guarantee on the work. If anything’s off within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s how we’ve run things since Glenn Hartley started taking care of Dallas attics.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely inspect your own attic safely: check the depth with a ruler, look for exposed joists, and scan for dark or matted patches. What you shouldn’t do is rent a blower and try to re-blow a large attic yourself unless you’ve run that machine before. Blown-in cellulose kicks up a serious amount of dust, and getting the depth even across a big Dallas attic requires some feel for the machine’s valves and airflow. I’ve seen too many DIY top-offs that left bare strips between bays because the homeowner moved too fast.
If the project is a small patch or a single bay, a hand-installed bag of GreenFiber is manageable. If the whole attic needs it, call Woolsey Insulation Dallas at (469) 916-4622. We’ll scope it, price it, and you’ll know the number before any work begins.
FAQs
GreenFiber cellulose keeps its R-value for 20 to 30 years in a dry, undisturbed attic. In Dallas, the two things that shorten that lifespan are roof leaks and rodent activity, both of which mat down or displace the material and require a top-off or localized replacement.
Yes, if the damaged area is localized, a patch and re-blow of that section is usually enough. We’ll assess the depth and condition across the whole attic before recommending anything, and the quoted price is the price. Call us at (469) 916-4622 and we’ll take a look.
Most Dallas attics take three to five hours from setup to cleanup. We protect the access area, blow the material to the target depth, level it out, and leave the job site cleaner than we found it.
We keep GreenFiber cellulose on our trucks for top-off and repair jobs, which means we can usually schedule you within a day or two. For full re-blows we also work with Reflectix and seven other leading insulation brands, so the material that goes in is the one that fits your attic, not whatever happened to be loaded that morning.
